Algebra Question : Basic

Find values of x and y for following given equations:

Equation 1:    y² - 5x = 49

Equation 2:  x² + y² = 49

In order to solve these equations lets, subtraction Equation number 1 from equation number 2:

                                x² + y² = 49

                -

                                    -5x + y² = 49

————————

                                       x²  + 5x = 0

Now, taking x as common, x (x + 5) = 0

So,  we have      x = 0    or    x = -5

Putting x = 0, in equation 1 , à y² - 5 (0) = 49

                                                   à y² = 49

                                                   à y = ±7

Putting x = -5 in equation 1, à y² - 5 (-5) = 49

                                                  à y² = 49  - 25

                                                    à y² = 24

                                                   à y = ± 2√6

Hence, (x, y)  = (0, ±7)  and (-5, ±2√6)
